How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?

Updated: 8 hours ago

There are several options available to achieve an aesthetically pleasing smile; however, dental veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments that are becoming more common and accessible. Previously, veneers were only for the rich and famous - these days, anyone who wants to improve their smile is a candidate for cosmetic dental work like veneers.

Dental veneers can be applied to one, two, the front, or all of your teeth to correct stains, cracks, chips, unevenness, or small gaps between the teeth. The two types of dental veneers are composite veneers and porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are the most popular option as porcelain offers durability, resistance to stains, and longevity.

So, how long do porcelain veneers actually last?

What are porcelain veneers?

Before we get into the lifespan of porcelain veneers, it’s important to first understand what they are, and how the porcelain material will ultimately determine how well they hold up.

Porcelain veneers are used to improve the look of teeth that are chipped, discoloured, misaligned, and worn down. However, porcelain veneers are not just used for aesthetic purposes; veneers can also be used to repair a damaged or fractured tooth. Depending on your needs, you may only have one or two teeth that require veneers; however, you can also get a full set of porcelain veneers for all (or just your front 8-10) teeth.

What are porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are customised to fit your teeth and are made of thin ceramic porcelain material that mimics the appearance of natural tooth enamel. The porcelain material is designed to be resistant to stains from drinks and food, and are built to last long without minimal maintenance (and good dental practices).

Before your porcelain veneers are placed, your dentist may have to remove a small amount of enamel from your natural teeth to roughen the tooth surface, which helps the veneers stay in place and ensure that the new veneers are not too big or bulky in your mouth. Contrary to what you see online - your teeth do not need to be shaved into pegs.

With proper maintenance and regular attendance at any necessary check-ups, porcelain veneers can last between 7 to 15 years if looked after well and regularly checked. Porcelain is a strong and durable material that can withstand regular activities and brushing and flossing.

Will I need to replace my porcelain veneers?

Yes, while porcelain veneers are a long term treatment, they do not last forever and will eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain veneers may need to be replaced when there are signs of:

  • Chips or cracks: Porcelain can still become damaged if subjected to rough treatment or generally with age. Chips, cracks, and other signs of wear and tear can impact both the function and appearance of the veneers.

  • Underlying tooth is decayed: Porcelain veneers are fitted tightly to the underlying tooth to prevent bacteria from accessing the underlying teeth. However, if the veneers become loose, bacteria can infiltrate the supporting tooth and cause decay. Decay of the underlying tooth can cause the veneer to detach, necessitating replacement.

  • Gum diseases: If issues like gum diseases or poor oral hygiene occur, a gap can develop between your veneers and gums. Gum disease issues must be addressed immediately, not only to ensure the function and appearance of your veneers, but also to prevent the disease from spreading within the mouth and causing other dental issues.

  • Improper cementation: If veneers are not cemented properly, they can become loose or fall off. Before the cementation, your dentist will custom-make your porcelain veneers to ensure a perfect fit and that they are tightly bonded to your underlying teeth - replicating the process and durability of standardised dental bonding.

How can I maintain porcelain veneers?

Although porcelain veneers are not “living”, the teeth attached to the veneers and the gums surrounding the veneers are living and require maintenance. Without proper maintenance, decay can occur around the veneers or in the underlying tooth structure. Practising dental hygiene, brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding sugary foods and drinks, will prolong the lifespan of porcelain veneers.

While practising good dental hygiene is in your control, unfortunate accidents are not and can occur. Sometimes these accidents, such as a chip or crack, can be so minor that you may not even notice them. This is why visiting your dentist at least twice a year is essential to monitor any damage, ensure proper maintenance, or identify the need for veneer repair or replacement.

Wearing a night splint can also help protect the veneers from excessive forces from clenching or grinding which may lead to the veneers chipping or cracking.
